Friday morning, May 1, 2026, officials with Columbia Housing and Ward Mungo Companies held a dedication ceremony for the Oaks at Saint Anna’s housing community.
Officials say the new community features 190 town homes and 95 1-bedroom units for senior citizens.
The new community sits on the former site of Gonzalez Gardens, which prior to its demolition, was the oldest public housing facility in the country.
Columbia Housing dedicated the Oaks at St. Anna’s Park on Friday. The development is fully leased with affordable, senior and workforce apartments.

The Oaks at St. Anna’s sits on 15.6 acres along Forest Drive near the MUSC Columbia Medical Center, where Gonzales Gardens had stood for more than 80 years before being demolished in 2017.

What began as a groundbreaking celebration in February 2024 is now a reality: the Esau Jenkins Village is officially complete and fully occupied ahead of the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2025, at 3 p.m.
The new community, which reached 100% occupancy in under 35 days, opens its doors to 72 affordable apartment homes for seniors aged 62 and older. The multi-year project fulfills a long-held vision for safe, clean, and dignified housing for Sea Island seniors.
