New option for affordable housing in the Midlands built

Friday morning, May 1, 2026, officials with Columbia Housing and Ward Mungo Companies held a dedication ceremony for the Oaks at Saint Anna’s housing community.

Officials say the new community features 190 town homes and 95 1-bedroom units for senior citizens.

The new community sits on the former site of Gonzalez Gardens, which prior to its demolition, was the oldest public housing facility in the country.

A new mixed-income housing community was formally dedicated by Columbia Housing and partners on Friday at one of the nation’s oldest public housing developments.

The Oaks at St. Anna’s sits on 15.6 acres along Forest Drive near the MUSC Columbia Medical Center, where Gonzales Gardens had stood for more than 80 years before being demolished in 2017.

The community is now fully leased with all 285 units occupied.
